The overall shape of the coastline between Xiangzhou and Macao can be ideally described as a succession of alternatively linked headlands and bays, forming two main bays. In front of them and extending towards Hong Kong are some 150 islands.
In recent decades, numerous new connections and infilling/landfills have been created in and around Gongbei Bay to improve connections between the main districts and towns of the river delta and the region, to introduce new major uses and to contribute to funding new land infrastructures such as the MC/ZH -HK/SZ bridge. Currently, the open landscape of Gongbei Bay is restricted and conditioned by the incipient view of the monumental bridge that will link Hong Kong and Macao in 2016.
The proposal for the new waterfront is based in part on the success of some classic European and modern American promenades. The restoration/reestablishment of the contact between Mount Dapu and the sea, currently interrupted by the waterfront, becomes one of the central themes of the proposal. The contact between its imposing mass, lined by lush trees, and the water, occurs at different levels, creating spaces at a lower level where collected/accumulated rainwater mixes with the seawater. The proposal envisages restoring this connection by creating two inner beaches embedded between huge boulders at the bottom, evoking/recreating the situation prior to the construction of the waterfront and (also) reformulating it in its own way in front of Mount Dapu.
In the same way, in order to contribute to financing the new infrastructures of Gongbei Bay and to introduce new activities in the seafront, some new building areas are proposed: the Nautical island and the new Museum plaza, which will integrate static and leisure activities, compatible with the uses planned for the New Museum. In addition, some areas planned for transformation, such as this large area next to Jiuzhou harbour, can also contribute to improving the road structure of this sector and its connection with the new access infrastructures to the MBI island, as well as renewing/improving its urban image.
