Beatrix neighborhood
During the 60s and 70s, office buildings were located parallel to parallel to Highway Utrechtsbaan. These buildings, close to the city centre, are well located and easily accessible by car. The large car parks around the enclosed buildings provide the functional mobility of the ensemble and mark the “suburban” (character of the) neighbourhood.
In 2000, after winning an international urban design competition, BAU conceived the Masterplan for the redevelopment of the mixed neighbourhood of Beatrix in order to reinforce the identity and achieve better integration of the whole area.
During the implementation phase, the office was also responsible for the design of the public spaces (Avenue Beatrixlaan, Prinsenhof Square, Marijkestraat and Corporate Gardens), the architectural quality of various sub-projects and for supporting the project of the various private and public elements. The masterplan is being carried out in phases by international offices (Kees Rijnboutt, Atelier Pro, Mario Botta, Hans van Beek, etc). The project is a restructuring of the central space of the Hague. New centrality is supported by the creation of a new light tram line that will connect the city with the future TGV station in Rotterdam.
