Porto-Campanhã Station
It is a sector of the city located in the northeast, with a significant presence of topography. Situated at an intermediate level between the lower city and the upper city, the neighborhood of Campanhã and its station will undergo a significant scale change with the arrival of the high-speed train. The current station will incorporate new functionalities and enhance its intermodality. A new plaza will be added to the existing station square, located on the west side of the railway corridor, which will accommodate the high-speed service and its related facilities.
Campanhã is one of the best-connected areas of the city (with a metro network and its location next to Porto's ring road), and undoubtedly has the potential to become a node of great metropolitan importance with the arrival of high-speed rail. However, paradoxically, it is also one of the most degraded parts of the city, where the transformation of its historical industrial fabric was never carried out and where it currently does not offer sufficient appeal as a neighborhood to live or work in. It is, therefore, a challenge that the Urbanization Plan must face in order to define strategies that allow for the reversal of this situation and find the appropriate solution.
The Urbanization Plan will improve the sector, completing the puzzle of all its components, integrating existing studies and commitments, and preparing the area with the set of instruments and available spaces that the arrival of high-speed rail will undoubtedly require. To make all this possible, it is proposed to be based on a hybrid ring urban structure, which allows for a solution for the transition between the metropolitan system and the urban system, ensuring a good conjunction between the historical/existing city and the city of the future, the city of the Campanhã sector. All of this will enable a good integration of non-motorized modes of transportation with the rest of the city, improving spatial continuity and ecological structure.
