Plano de Urbanização Porto-Campanhã
This sector of the city, located in the northeast, is characterized by significant topographical features. Positioned at an intermediate level between the lower and upper city, the Campanhã neighborhood and its station are set to undergo a major transformation with the arrival of the high-speed train. The current station will incorporate new functionalities and strengthen its intermodality. Additionally, a new plaza will be created adjacent to the existing station square, on the west side of the railway corridor, to accommodate the high-speed service and its related facilities.
Campanhã is one of the city's best-connected areas—served by the metro network and located next to Porto’s ring road—and has clear potential to become a major metropolitan hub with the arrival of high-speed rail. Paradoxically, however, it remains one of the most degraded parts of the city. The transformation of its historic industrial fabric was never fully realized, and today the neighborhood lacks sufficient appeal as a place to live or work. Addressing this challenge is a key objective of the Urbanization Plan, which must define strategies to reverse this situation and find appropriate solutions.
The Urbanization Plan aims to improve the area by completing the puzzle of its various components, integrating existing studies and commitments, and preparing the sector with the tools and spaces required by the arrival of high-speed rail. To make this possible, the plan is based on a hybrid ring urban structure, providing a transitional framework between the metropolitan and urban systems. This ensures a strong connection between the historical/existing city and the future city—the city of the Campanhã sector. The approach will also support the integration of non-motorized transportation modes, enhancing spatial continuity and the ecological structure.
