Plano de Pormenor da Estação de Gaia – Sto. Ovidio
The primary objective of the Plano de Pormenor is to ensure the harmonious and functional integration of the new high-speed railway station—built underground—into the existing urban fabric. The plan not only introduces a renewed dynamic to the urban space but also seeks to maximise the regenerative impact of high-speed rail infrastructure.
This sector of the city already enjoys excellent metropolitan accessibility. It is strategically located near major mobility corridors and served by two metro stations, two metro lines, and several urban bus routes.
Situated at the Santo Ovídio node in Vila Nova de Gaia, the area lies at the convergence of three major structural axes:
-. The historical axis, which traces the ancient path connecting the upper and lower parts of the city.
-. The modern axis, represented by Avenida da República, developed in the second half of the 20th century, extending southward from the route initially laid out by the Luís I Bridge over the Douro River.
-. The natural axis, composed of green areas and a water runoff corridor leading to the river.
This part of the city is also defined by steep topography, with significant elevation changes from north to south. The creation of a new linear park along this gradient enables the connection between different levels and strengthens pedestrian links with the surrounding urban fabric. Access to the new station will be provided through two skylights located at the northern and southern ends of the park.
The combination of strong accessibility and the unique character of the site gives the area remarkable appeal. The arrival of high-speed rail will generate new demands in terms of mobility and attract both economic and residential developments, contributing to the emergence of a new metropolitan hub.
The new buildings adjacent to the park will feature predominantly tertiary uses, alongside some residential and hotel spaces, with the overarching goal of creating a truly hybrid urban fabric in a location of exceptional accessibility and urban vitality.
