Place Aragó
Place Arago is located in the Marengo-Périole district, a neighbourhood long known for its distinctive architecture. Popular for its proximity to the train station and city centre, the area combines urban dynamism with a strong sense of identity.
The square itself, with its characteristic circular layout and 19th-century terraced houses, had gradually lost its appeal. Dominated by car traffic and fragmented in design, it no longer reflected the vibrant character of the surrounding city.
The redevelopment project has transformed this former car park into a generous public space, striking a balance between green areas and mineral surfaces. A new alignment of trees at the heart of the square complements the existing circle of century-old Sophora trees, while beds of shrubs and flowering plants bring freshness and seasonal colour. Locally crafted brick has been reintroduced as a paving material, reinforcing the site’s identity and texture.
Through a participatory process involving local residents, car traffic has been limited in favour of pedestrians and cyclists. Today, Place Arago is appreciated for its calm and welcoming atmosphere—a renewed meeting place and a point of reference for the neighbourhood.
