Design of the heart of Budapest
Main aim is to reorganize the City Centre enhancing its historic values, and the quality of its spaces and buildings. For that several strategies must play together:
1. Acknowledging the Town “WALL”. Many European cities take advantage of that clear definition.
2. In order to operate a better role for the City Centre it is necessary to clarify access system by “re-modulating” traffic flows and re-scaling heavy infrastructures. Old city Centre should not be –in a long-term- a place that car flows are crossing, but it is a destination place with good access from:
Public Transportation. Taking the benefit of its baricentric location.
Pedestrian and bicycles. Organizing comfortable streets and Plazas for pedestrians. Also taking into account some arcades and passages.
Organize parking as a system avoiding the production of gaps with pedestrian routes.
3. Rehabilitate and refurbish key “open spaces” and main buildings:
Identifying the Boulevard and the riverfront as two major spaces.
Creating a system of necklaces with plazas and pedestrian streets in between the most interesting spots. This strategy can be enhanced with cultural, commercial and civic uses.
Building and spaces nearby must play together.
Some areas can be treated as shadows values to allow rehabilitation of housing and soft activities.
