Coimbra
The urban project around Coimbra station complements the implementation of the new high-speed lines in Portugal, which will be executed in the coming years. It is a project that allows transforming the current Coimbra B station into a new central hub of the city, capable of properly accommodating the new functionalities and facilitating easy intermodality with all the modes of transport it will host (High-speed trains, Regional trains, Sistema Movilidade Mondego, bicycles, cars, buses, and other sustainable transportation).
A new neighborhood will be developed around the station, ensuring an urban structure that fosters good connections with the surrounding neighborhoods. The main objective is to guarantee a certain level of continuity between Coimbra's historic center and the new station district, by ensuring a good north-south continuity between Zona Ribeirinha de Coimbra and the eastern part of the new intermodal station. This will be achieved through a restructuring of Rua do Padrão (with the future planned change of the IC2 route) and the realignment of Avenida Marginal, which will serve both as a road connection and a green corridor for alternative transportation modes.
Moreover, it is of great importance to ensure the proper continuity of the green structure between the east and west, connecting Ribeira do Coselhas and Mata Nacional do Choupal. This will involve creating a new green space between the new Sistema Movilidade Mondego strip and Avenida Marginal, integrating both areas into a unified green structure that connects with existing green spaces and recognizes and enhances the continuity of the water system.
