Plano de Pormenor da Estação de Coimbra
The urban project surrounding Coimbra station complements the implementation of the new high-speed lines in Portugal, which will be carried out in the coming years. This project enables the transformation of the current Coimbra B station into a new central hub for the city, capable of accommodating new functionalities and facilitating seamless intermodality with all modes of transport it will serve (high-speed trains, regional trains, Sistema de Mobilidade do Mondego, bicycles, cars, buses, and other sustainable transportation).
A new neighborhood will be developed around the station, establishing an urban structure that promotes strong connections with the surrounding areas. The main objective is to ensure continuity between Coimbra’s historic center and the new station district by strengthening the north-south connection between the Zona Ribeirinha de Coimbra and the eastern side of the new intermodal station. This will be achieved through the restructuring of Rua do Padrão (in line with the future reconfiguration of the IC2 route) and the realignment of Avenida Marginal, which will function both as a road link and a green corridor for alternative transport modes.
Equally important is ensuring the continuity of the green structure from east to west, connecting Ribeira do Coselhas and Mata Nacional do Choupal. This will involve the creation of a new green space between the new Sistema de Mobilidade do Mondego corridor and Avenida Marginal, integrating both areas into a unified green structure that links with existing green spaces and reinforces the continuity of the water system.
