City Gate I
CityGate I is a completed urban design project in Anderlecht, Brussels. It was developed as part of the revitalization program for the Cureghem district and the Canal-Midi neighborhood contract. Covering more than 130,000 square meters, the CityGate program includes three operations: CityGate I, Petite Île CityGate II and CityGate III, each with its own identity. CityGate I was conceived as a hinge neighborhood, linking Cureghem, the Gare du Midi station and future developments along the canal.
The project is structured around three main areas: Kuborn, Marchandises and Goujons. It combines housing, economic activities, public facilities and open space. Designed in close collaboration with the Brussels-Capital Region and the municipality of Anderlecht, the masterplan rebuilds the urban fabric and strengthens social and spatial cohesion.
In the Goujons block, thirty-five housing units and a 1,500-square-meter Social and Health Center were built, including a medical house and a ONE consultation service. This was developed with Médecins du Monde and partly funded by European FEDER resources. In the Marchandises block, the innovative concept of the Bâtiment à Affectations Multiples was introduced: a modular and reversible building of 21,000 square meters that integrates workshops, economic spaces, housing, a nursery and shared green areas. Public spaces such as squares and streets were redesigned with principles of continuity, biodiversity and sustainability, aligned with future developments like the PPAS Biestebroeck.
CityGate I does not simply combine functions; it weaves them together into a flexible and mixed urban ecosystem. Housing, production, services and public space coexist in balance. The project transforms a fragmented industrial area into a vibrant, sustainable and connected urban fabric, consolidating a model of city that integrates industrial heritage, social present and metropolitan future.
