Study on the urban patterns of hospital facilities and the biomedical sector in the metropolitan region of Barcelona: critical analysis and prospects for their medium-term
The role of the morphological layout of facilities, hospital services and biomedical research in a metropolitan system such as that of Barcelona within Catalonia, requires considering the different elements involved in the creation of this ecosystem. While traditionally it was the hospital that combined a wide range of services around it (such as care, assistance, and teaching, as well as the different medical specialities), today this ecosystem is much more complex and is undergoing profound transformation.
On the one hand, it has become a very important part of the economy, supported by impressive research in the global market, and on the other hand, it is produced by new means of communication, which are challenging the very administration of health care, starting with digital medicine, among others.
This research aims to focus on the changes in urban models related to healthcare and life sciences, as well as their evolution and current trends. We think that we may be able to discover some morphological patterns or spatial configurations that can help us understand the demand of healthcare for new Spaces in the city or the transformation of a large part of the existing ones.
It must be borne in mind that this ecosystem, like so many others, is constantly evolving, and it is sometimes difficult to understand the changes that are taking place because, even though they are significant, they are overshadowed by the small details of everyday reality.
For this reason, looking at the bigger picture and understanding what is happening elsewhere and how it is affecting the structure of metropolitan spaces can help us understand what the next phases of the evolution of this ecosystem might look like.
