Avignon Courtine Confluence
At the confluence of the Rhône, the Durance, and the TGV, the Courtine site carries the future challenges of the Avignon metropolitan area. The section influenced by the TGV train station, located at the center of ancient agricultural technology and an artisan activity zone, will become a new focal point. The urban project being developed proposes, through the study of three development zones, a master plan based on the creation of large plots, a powerful landscape system, and the utilization of hydrological constraints. It invents a new urban geography for the development of an active, peaceful neighborhood with an extraordinary landscape identity.
Concerned with valorizing these potentials, the Grand Avignon and the City of Avignon are committed to an ambitious metropolitan project with the creation of the Avignon Confluence district. The ambition is to invest in this "piece of land," an open gateway to the rivers and the grand landscape, to create conditions for development that benefit the entire metropolitan area and enhance its influence.
Dealing with water, risks, and opportunities - The susceptibility to flooding, coupled with rainwater management, led to the definition of altitude levels with the creation of four levels. The objectives are multiple: managing stormwater and infiltrating water in case of heavy precipitation and floods, while providing a functional framework always above water.
Unfolding and amplifying existing landscape structures - The project develops a grand park as an extension of the TGV Station axis, serving as the initial segment of the Civic Axis that will eventually stretch to the city center. This park integrates a road link and an important bus connection between the Charles de Gaulle Ring Road and the TGV station. This emblematic public space will be known as the entrance gate to the Courtine Confluence district.
Macro-lots, a concept capable of promoting efficient management for a sustainable city - The macro-lot is composed of a set of blocks that function according to principles related to energy management, flood control, water management, parking, functional programming, volumes and floor area, and the characteristics of public or private exterior spaces.
