Allées Jean Jaurès
Allées Jean Jaurès is a symbolic axis that connects the city centre to the Canal du Midi and Matabiau train station. The project changes the proportion of space dedicated to vehicles in favour of active modes of transport, with the aim of creating a more fluid space by reinterpreting the composition of the avenue. A promenade lined with trees and aromatic plants has been created, like a rambla garden. The rigorous composition of the profiles, the simplicity and consistency of the paving materials and the choice of unique plant species contribute to creating a strong new identity.
The central part is reserved for a mineral space of variable width lined with planted strips. The promenade can be widened to accommodate markets and other events. The garden strips are planted with a rich shrub stratum and a tree layer. The shrub layer is composed mainly of Mediterranean plants specifically chosen for their resistance to the climate as well as for their fragrance and flowering. The tree layer is made up of Mediterranean and flowering species: 119 holm oaks, 22 cork oaks, 49 elms, 47 magnolias, 10 Turner oaks. Flat maples and lime trees will complete the existing alignments along the pavements. Extensive planting on an existing underground car park and above the subway was an ambitious challenge with many technical constraints.
At nightfall, the same luminous atmosphere, homogeneous and consistent, warm, and welcoming, enlivens Allées Jean Jaurès.
